SONGS AND STORIES with a SCOTTISH TWIST with BETH McINTOSH and CHARLIE CRAIGHEAD

January 10, 2005

Tuesday, January 18 starting at 8 o’clock songwriter Beth McIntosh and author/filmmaker Charlie Craighead will appear at Dornan’s in Moose, WY. The show will feature Beth and Charlie’s unique longtime collaboration with songs, stories and humour.

Having recently returned from a tour of Scotland, Beth will be following the advice from 19th century Glaswegian designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh: “There is hope in honest error, but none in the icy perfection of the mere stylist.” In other words, Try Something New! She will perform new tunes from Scotland and new tunes of her own and pal up with Charlie for an intriguing evening.

Returning to Ayr, Scotland (birthplace of Robert Burns) was tremendously inspiring for Beth, who says she felt like she was engaged in the “music indigenous to my DNA. The people were lovely--intelligent, kind, soft spoken and vastly informed about world events. The music was gorgeous and inclusive, and there were people of EVERY age playing songs both ancient and modern. It is the kind of music community that nurtures music as an integral and vivid part of everyday culture.”

The evening will feature Charlie Craighead’s clever and delightfully deep insight and humour. Charlie will tell stories that speak of ancestors, beliefs, love for land and family, and finding the threads that tie us all together.

Instead of finding meaning in the direction the world is going, Beth and Charlie ask “What if we look instead at where our world has been?” They have discovered that their ancestors had shared history in Scotland and members of both families ended up in New England in the 1600’s after fleeing religious persecution. They have also discovered a shared philosophy of the land that seemed to stretch all the way back to the earliest Craigheads and Mackintoshes.

Beth’s songs contrast the old with the new, carrying on a folk tradition while finding ways to express the modern dilemma. While in Scotland, she learned songs from traditional balladeers as well as cutting edge recording artists. She used the exposure to celtic rhythms and harmonic structures to create new pieces of her own. Between songs Charlie will read selected works, tell stories, and present the lighter side of not being able to choose your ancestors (or your descendants).

The show will move through themes of Scotland and its people, both ancient and modern; the great move to America; family identity and independent thought. Beth and Charlie will artistically address the present day with thoughts on the land, our relationship with creativity and strange but harmless friends.
